Asian shares slipped and the dollar eased against a basket of currencies on Wednesday, dragged down by cautious commentary from the US Treasury on investors’ outflows and worries that escalating trade tensions with China will derail an anticipated recovery in global growth.

After remaining largely unscathed over the past month, shares worldwide are at a four-year high on hopes that US-China trade talks will help underpin a global recovery. Last week, US President Donald Trump and China’s president, Xi Jinping, agreed to a 90-day truce in a trade dispute that has roiled global markets and cut billions from global growth.

But traders are worried that US-China trade disputes will overwhelm efforts by the International Monetary Fund and US policymakers to inflate away an economic slowdown. The US economy shrank more than expected in the first quarter and the IMF has forecast growth will be a mere 1.4% for this year.

“It is not clear how either of these initiatives will play out,” said Narek Kambakhsha, strategist at Deutsche Bank in Singapore, referring to expectations of a weaker US dollar.

On Tuesday, the Treasury repeated concerns that “de-risking” investors are pulling money from emerging markets and central banks, while still sounding upbeat about the impact of fiscal stimulus in Japan, America, Europe and China.

“We remain confident in the economic growth outlook over the medium to long term,” a Treasury spokesman said. “However, macroeconomic conditions remain a source of uncertainty, including the commitment to exchange rates.”

The Greenback’s outlook over the next three months was the most sensitive to such factors, according to Treasuries’ International Economics team, in a monthly report on Tuesday. The dollar is now down about 1.6% against a basket of major currencies since its June 17 peak, a drop seen as supporting the greenback’s long-term uptrend.
