Photoshop’s Interface
When you first start Photoshop, its Interface appears with several features as shown in Figure 6-1. Don’t worry about memorizing the menu system as you work with Photoshop because you’ll see the menu system more often than not.
To get to the canvas that is the area on which your images reside and to which you add layers, click the New Layer icon.

If you’re comfortable with Windows, you may have noticed that the screenshots used in this book are of Windows XP. That’s because Photoshop doesn’t run on Windows 7. The Interface
The following sections describe the Photoshop Interface and its major features: the Layer palette, the Layers panel, the Image window, the Tools palette, and the history panel.
The Layer palette
The Layer palette (see Figure 6-2) is a window that gives you a quick look at all the layers in your image. When you click the New Layer icon, you create a new layer, a step you take in the next section in order to create your image. You move the layers around in the Layer palette to create the image — you can add them to the image directly or use them as masks to control the transparency of other layers.

Layers are the building blocks of your image. Although you can work with images without layers, Photoshop layers make your image more interactive. Layers become a bridge that enables you to apply effects, add content, and blend them with other layers or with the background image.
