PA 971 continues into northern Latrobe and intersects PA 926 in the community of Haskins. The route turns northeast away from PA 926 and runs past more suburban development before crossing the Monongahela River and heading into the commercial center of Latrobe. In the city, the route is known as North Tenth Street and intersects the western terminus of PA 23.  PA 971 heads southeast and intersects its northern terminus, an interchange with US 22 (Fourth Street). Here, the road continues south as Fifth Street, heading through the commercial downtown of the borough and passing by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy Nature Center and Latrobe Cathedral. PA 971 heads through more of the city and continues west past homes before crossing back into Fairview Township and becoming South Eighth Street. The route winds to the north and passes under I-79 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) on a bridge that is a junction with I-79&#8217;s ramp to and from the Pennsylvania Turnpike.<\/p>\n<p>History<\/p>\n<p>What is now PA 971 was paved by 1942. The route was signed in the 1960s. In the 1970s, PA 971 was designated between PA 966 in Mount Pleasant and US 22 in Latrobe, replacing part of PA 22.
