There is no standard screening tool, and the appropriate age of screening for colorectal cancer remains controversial. Screening guidelines for colorectal cancer have focused primarily on patients who have been identified as having adenomatous polyps, because the natural history of colorectal cancer in persons with familial adenomatous polyposis has not been well defined. We report the case of a 39-year-old woman who had a history of familial adenomatous polyposis and was referred for surveillance colonoscopy to evaluate the discovery of a colectomy scar on a screening colonoscopy. Colonoscopy revealed 2 adenomatous polyps, both confirmed to be hyperplastic, in the rectum.
