The CAD standards for representing 3D objects have evolved considerably over the years. At first, 2D CAD applications supported one of two basic standards: either 2D drawings or CAD drawings. However, as CAD drawings have become more complex, there are numerous properties for representing objects in 3D. For instance, many parts on a CAD drawing need to be represented with wire or other solid modeling objects. To support solid modeling, and to simplify many properties, CAD standards were updated to support a third standard\u2014the OBJ model file format.<\/p>\n

AutoCAD introduced OBJ model format in AutoCAD 2006, and has supported it ever since. OBJ model format is still supported in AutoCAD 2023.<\/p>\n

OBJ model format is the standard for representing 3D CAD data in a small file format that is used by many CAD programs. OBJ is similar to the earlier PLY format, with the main difference being that a file saved in OBJ format supports the addition of \u201cflats\u201d on the surface of a 3D object, allowing for the display of 3D objects that are like a paper drawing.<\/p>\n

AutoCAD 2010 introduced the ability to export OBJ model format. With the release of AutoCAD 2023, you can now import OBJ model format, which supports all of the flat properties available for OBJ model files.<\/p>\n
