SACRAMENTO (CBS13) \u2014 A freshman lawmaker admitted to a felony and faced a vote of expulsion in the California State Assembly on Wednesday, after an investigation found he used taxpayer-funded campaign funds for personal expenses.<\/p>\n
Assemblyman Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor, and faces up to six months in jail. He will also be required to repay the state about $4,000 in campaign funds.<\/p>\n
He was found guilty of misappropriation of official funds from the Assembly\u2019s Democratic caucus. The 35-year-old would have faced up to 18 months in jail and\/or $4,500 in fines.<\/p>\n
His career as a state legislator was over, after he was to have been expelled by the Assembly on Wednesday. Now, he must file an amended campaign finance report, which will show what he has already repaid to the state.<\/p>\n
In June, the Assembly\u2019s Democratic Caucus began an investigation into Rendon after a complaint from the California Fair Political Practices Commission alleged Rendon misused $4,000 in campaign funds.<\/p>\n
Rendon\u2019s campaign treasurer filed a police report on May 8, and Rendon himself called a meeting with the caucus, where he was asked to step down. That evening, Rendon admitted to the felony and said he would resign from the Assembly. Rendon\u2019s resignation would have been effective after the Assembly\u2019s July 17 election, but that means he was not eligible to be re-elected in November.<\/p>\n
Rendon, 35, of Lakewood, took office last January. He said he did not use campaign funds to pay for personal items, including a $2,600 he used to rent a house in Morgan Hill.<\/p>\n
The police report said Rendon spent $2,632 on a house in Morgan Hill that he had rented last November.<\/p>\n
Two other legislators, Republican Michael Weimer and Democrat Evan Low, also had allegations of campaign-fund misuse. Both were required to reimburse the state, and if they did not, they could be expelled.<\/p>\n
An investigation determined Weimer and Low had misused $161 in campaign money for personal and family use. Weimer, a Republican from Camarillo, has paid the state $2,080. Low, a Democrat from Long Beach, has repaid $800.<\/p>\n
The Assembly Ethics Committee has begun its own investigation, focusing on how the caucus responded to the complaint.<\/p>\n
