In addition to just manipulating an image, you can also view it as a layered image and use layer masks to create or alter parts of an image. These various tools are discussed in this chapter, as well as some of the basics of managing layers and working with the workspace. I also share a lot of tips on subjects such as creative ways to generate a new background, which are always fun to try.\nLooking at Elements Basics\nWhen you open a photograph you may not be able to tell exactly what it is made of. The subject is there, but it doesn’t really have a look; it might just appear to be a cloud floating in the sky.\nPhotoshop enables you to unravel the individual elements that are in a photo and to apply special effects and retouching to them. However, the original photograph remains the same. Although you can use the skills you’re about to learn to layer a fake background over a photo, Photoshop gives you full control over the photograph without any additional layers.\nThe first time you open a photo in Photoshop Elements you see an image in an active tab in the workspace, as shown in Figure 1-1.\nPhotoshop Elements automatically puts the photo on a new layer named `Background`. It does this in all open documents. You can move this layer to the background layer or create a new layer. This new layer is like a virtual matte for all your work.\n**Figure 1-1:** The Elements workspace looks similar to Photoshop’s.\nSo instead of painting a background on a newly created document, you paint on an existing layer. Here’s what you need to know about layers:\n A layer is a single color image that can be used to place and apply a second image over it. Each layer has its own transparency setting.\nBy default, layers are visible on their own layer tab, and you can create more by right-clicking in the Background layer.\nLayers are an important part of Photoshop’s editing system.
