The United Kingdom has a track record of drug approvals that vastly outstrips the rest of the European Union. According to data from the EU GMP certification agency and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the United Kingdom approved 108 unique applications (out of a total of 5,615 EU applications) on November 8, while the EU as a whole had approved 955 unique applications at that time.<\/p>\n
UK agencies are supposed to coordinate with their EU colleagues in order to ensure the safety and efficacy of drugs, and the fact that the UK was permitting drugs to be tested more often than anyone else suggests that it may have more evidence-based research than the rest of the union.<\/p>\n
There are many ways in which the UK could be stricter when reviewing applications, and a variety of anti-competitive practices (e.g. maintaining a reserve of drugs for export) certainly hurt their ability to authorize more drugs.<\/p>\n

In the weeks since the blizzard, UK drugs have been added to more than 20,000 prescriptions, according to Medscape.
