Therefore, a high concentration of PN junction material always results in emission of radiation at some non-ideal angle with respect to the PN junction.<br \/>\nGenerally, as the concentration of PN junction material increases, the ability of an LED to generate radiation decreases. Specifically, in indirect junction LEDs, more of the radiation is emitted at some non-ideal angle with respect to the PN junction rather than by direct transmission through the PN junction. This also happens to be the preferred orientation of the radiating molecules with respect to each other. The result is to reduce the efficiency of the LED. To overcome the efficiency reduction, the amount of PN junction material that is used must be reduced, which in turn reduces the output of the LED. There is a practical limit on the reduction in PN junction material due to the directivity of the radiation.
