The Portuguese Brigade of the 1st International Brigades, the Portuguese Brigade of the 2nd Line (, or “Portuguese Brigade of the 2nd Line”) was the Portuguese unit of the 1st International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War. The brigade was formed in August 1938, and integrated into the 2nd British Army. The brigade was never officially claimed by Portugal.<\/p>\n
History
\nAt the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936, the Portuguese government declared neutrality. However, there were some attempts to establish pro-government militia units, the first being the 1st International Brigade, with the Portuguese as one of its component units. As a result, a Portuguese Brigade was established in August 1938, with Henrique Dias, then lieutenant colonel of the 1st Brigade, as its first commander. Its equipment consisted in 10 105\u00a0mm R35\/41 howitzers, one M14\/41 light tank, one L-10 light tank, two M1912\/28M Browning machine guns, four Browning M1917 machine guns, six Bren Guns, 16 infantry mortars, and four 22 pounder field guns.<\/p>\n
The brigade was formed with 600 conscripts under command, in three Battalions: the 1st and 2nd Portuguese Battalions (in Almeida and Porto, respectively), which were added in October 1938. The first battalion was commanded by Capit\u00e3o Nuno da Silva, and the 2nd by Jos\u00e9 Alberto Tavares de Almeida. In October 1939 the brigade was sent to fight the Battle of the Ebro.<\/p>\n
In 1940 the brigade formed part of the defense of Madrid (Castle of Madrid), eventually providing cover for the escape of Jaime Ortiz de Z\u00e1rate’s Army of the Southwest. In March 1941 the 2nd Battalion retreated to Toledo in order to defend that city’s crown of a citadel.<\/p>\n
The regiment was disbanded in June 1941 as an internal division of the 2nd Foreign Regiment of the “Spanish International Brigade”.<\/p>\n
At the start of the Second World War, 300 soldiers of the brigade were incorporated into the independent artillery brigade of Francisco Franco’s Nationalist Army.<\/p>\n
