This vaccine had an extremely high success rate. It was introduced into almost all of the armed forces during World War II. This was a very large number of people and led to the rapid development of the first generation of cancer vaccines. These early vaccines were effective against a few cancers, mainly childhood cancers.\nIn the early 1950s, an association was discovered between the cancer that was prevalent in children called acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). In addition, patients with ALL were dying of secondary infections. The cause of the death in the ALL children was not believed to be the cancer. It was assumed that the death occurred from the effects of radiation from the X-rays used during therapy to treat the leukemia. It was not until the early 1950s that it was realized that the leukemia was caused by a virus. The virus is called the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) which is associated with a cancer called Burkitt lymphoma. The vaccine that was used in the early 1950s to treat cancer in children was called the PV-16. PV-16 was used to treat over 15,000 children a year from the 1940s to the early 1960s.\nPV-16 was made from two sources. It was made from the killed virus with the use of formalin and it was made from a patient&#8217;s tumor with use of heat. The immune response to the PV-16 killed virus vaccine was extremely high in some patients.
