Use Lightroom only when you have a legacy Photoshop, PSD, or.PSB file format. Unless you have an image locked down in Photoshop already, don’t bother with Lightroom. You can’t edit photos in Lightroom and save edited photos to Lightroom. Instead, save files to a single location.\nPhotoshop CS6 offers additional workflows and features, including content-aware move and copy, the ability to adjust details within a photo, curves to edit and control shadow and highlight tonal ranges, and more. It also has faster performance than previous versions. And, for advanced users, it can handle higher-resolution images for content-aware moves. Photoshop CS6 also introduces the ability to create live compositions by overlaying shapes.\nPhotoshop CS6 Extended was released in 2013. Although it offers new features, the primary reason to upgrade is that it works as a standalone program, which enables Photoshop to be accessed outside of the Creative Cloud subscription service.\nFigure 3-1 shows Photoshop in the Bridge view in CS6 and Extended. Each program has a different Workspace tab:\n**Figure 3-1:** Lightroom and Photoshop use different tabs and windows.\nPhotoshop CS6: Workspace\nIn Figure 3-1, the Photoshop Workspace contains the Tools panel with its nine tools, plus the Options and Bridge window.\n The tabs along the top are shown on the left in Figure 3-2 and consist of the following:\n Media Browser: This window is a handy feature that enables you to add, remove, or navigate through a folder containing your images. You can also insert a predefined set of digital cameras and websites.\n**Figure 3-2:** The Photoshop Workspace in Photoshop CS6.\n History: This window is similar to the one in the Lightroom interface. You can see your images as they were before or after editing, along with a count of the times each photo was edited, the type of editing applied, and the date and time when the photo was edited. You can see a detailed list of your changes for each image when you click the History button.\n Channels: This window lets you organize your photo or image into any number of channels. The window includes the thumbnails of the original image and of your edited image. From the options menu, you can add more channels to the image. You<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n With Photoshop CS6, Adobe introduced a new editing tool called Smart Brush. Photoshop CS6 still contains an older, more traditional Photoshop Brush tool that was introduced with Photoshop CS5. Both these tools are provided as part of Photoshop Elements along with some other advanced features that are only available in the full version.\nWe\u2019ve compared these two brushes extensively, to provide you with an idea of which tool is more versatile and better suited for your image editing needs.\nThis article goes over the basics, allows you to compare the two and how they\u2019re different. We\u2019ll also run through some basic editing processes using each tool to show you how they work and how they can be used with various image editing tasks.\nSo let\u2019s get started!\nThe Photoshop Brush Tool\nPhotoshop\u2019s most basic tool is the Brush Tool. The Brush Tool is a selection tool which creates and manipulates selections (opaque areas of a photo or image) on the fly. It can be used to create and edit shapes and it can also work as an eraser.\nThe Brush Tool works in a similar way to the Magic Wand Tool. When you hold down the Tool icon on your keyboard, the Brush Brush appears. Next, you can activate the Tool by clicking on any area of your photo or image. The Brush tool will then highlight, or select, that area in the image.\nNote:\nIf your image contains a background layer, the brush tool will not paint over your layer. If it does, you need to turn off the background layer in your Layers panel, click on the layer to make it active, and then press the backspace or delete key on your keyboard.\nOnce you\u2019ve selected the area you wish to edit, you can adjust the size and shape of the brush as desired using the Brush Size and Shape controls on the Options Bar.\nAs you adjust these controls, the Brush Tool will change in shape so that it looks like the screenshot below:\nAs you work on your image, the Brush Tool will create selections based on the intensity of the color within the selected area.\nNote:\nThe selection tools you use in a program, whether they\u2019re shape selection tools, color selection tools or eraser tools, will only create new selections based on the pixels within the selected area, not the area itself. It\u2019s often used to create text or shapes.\nThe Magic Wand is Photoshop\u2019s nondestructive Magic Wand. It allows you to select an area by the color, shape, or density of pixels.\nThe Type Tool lets you create text within a drawing. This is a great tool for designing logos or illustrating a scene.\nThe Image Trace is similar to the Magic Wand, but it\u2019s designed to select pixels by shape.\nThe Bevel and Emboss lets you create a three-dimensional look for images. You can use this tool to add a wood texture to artwork.\nThe Brush Strokes lets you apply a texture to an image. You can use this tool for abstract art and collages.\nThe Healing Brush lets you quickly repair scratches and other defects in an image. You can make brush strokes appear and disappear, also known as feathering.\nThe Lens Flare Filter creates an unnatural, blurry light effect. You can use this effect to draw attention to an image.\nThe Smudge tool is used to apply a random texture to an image. It can also be used for abstract art.\nThe Burn tool is used to selectively lighten or darken an area of an image.\nThe Masticate Filter lets you apply distortion to create optical effects. You can use this filter to make images look like old photographs.\nThe Shuffle feature uses an algorithm to randomize a set of options. It\u2019s useful for saving time while designing, because you\u2019ll have more options.\nThe Brush Adjust function allows you to fine-tune brush settings. You can even change brush size, hardness, and spatter.\nThe Dividers feature lets you separate your drawing into a grid. It\u2019s often used to align your artwork.\nThe Lens Blur lets you apply a blur effect to a drawing. It\u2019s similar to the Masticate Filter, but it\u2019s less precise.\nThe Lens Distortion lets you create a photo-like blur effect for your artwork.
