Although TGF beta 1 has potent growth-inhibitory effects on keratinocyte cultures, keratinocytes only exhibit 50% of the growth-inhibitory response of fibroblasts on TGF beta 1 stimulation. TGF beta 1 reduces the rate of keratinocyte proliferation following DNA synthesis by approximately 10% in vitro at a dose as low as 0.01 ng\/ml. However, at higher doses, it reduces the cell number by 25%.
