Results were obtained for three dimensions, including a single balloon case, and for stress distributions in the balloon and the aorta. The aortic pressure increased with balloon expansion. The stress was concentrated in the innermost layer of the plaques, with a greater strain occurring in the rupture region. The stress in the rupture region in a single balloon case exceeded the threshold for plaque rupture at the highest intraluminal pressures, and the stress was influenced by balloon dimensions and shape. Strain energy release increased linearly with balloon diameter. Aortic atheroma would experience large tensile stresses upon passive dilation, and the rupture probability would increase with increasing intraluminal pressure. In clinical practice, the combination of passive dilation and a single balloon might promote plaque rupture.
