The goal of the Mini vMac project is to help preserve software made for early Macintosh computers, the computers that Apple sold from 1984 to 1996 based upon Motorola’s 680×0 microprocessors. The center of this project is a family of free and open source emulators that allow such software to be used on modern computers. The first member of this family emulates the Macintosh Plus.
\nMini vMac began in 2001 as a spin off of the program vMac. It was originally intended to be of limited interest, a simpler version to serve as a programmers introduction to vMac. But vMac hasn’t been updated in many years, so Mini vMac may now be considered its continuation.
\nThe “Mini” in the name now means that each emulator in the family is as small and simple as possible. The meta program and data that generate the emulators (the Mini vMac build system) is rather bigger. Besides the Macintosh Plus, there are also emulations of the Macintosh 128K, 512K, 512Ke, SE, Classic, and SE FDHD. Work is in progress on Macintosh II emulation. There are also numerous other options.
\nMini vMac requires a ROM image file to run, and so can be legally used only by those who own a 680×0 based Macintosh. This leads to the question, if you need to own the real computer to use it, what is the use of the emulator? First, a real Macintosh won’t last forever. It is common for the power supply to fail. It is still legal to use the emulation after the real computer breaks.
\nAnd second, the emulation is more convenient than the real thing. It is much faster (on modern computers) and you can use a better screen, keyboard, and mouse. And it is easier to transfer files between the modern computer and the emulator.
\nIn other words, it will be able to run old Macintosh applications that otherwise could not be used on newer machines.<\/p>\n

\nThe actual emulator binary for Mini vMac has two components. One is called vMac, which is the actual emulator, and is part of the emulator package. The other component is called the Mini vMac build system. \nThe emulator’s target processor is the Motorola 680×0, and runs on top of the GNU multitasking operating system, GNU\/Hurd.
\nThe emulator uses three emulation units (MU):
\nOne for IO port device access
\nOne for memory access
\nOne for external communication (including display scan conversion)
\nEach MU allows for a certain amount of hardware abstraction, so that it does not need to translate the exact same code for each type of 680×0 processor. For example, the first MU provides access to the keyboard and mouse directly, and the memory MU directly provides access to the memory in the first 68000’s of ROM. The IO port MU generates IO port signals according to the data received, and can map them to the port on the real device.
\nThe emulator also allows a real 68000 to be used (by installing the ROM in the real computer), for those instances where there is no good emulator available. This is the combination of a real Macintosh and a 68000 emulator (code on top of an emulator with a real 68000), like the Macintosh 128K. With a real 68000 in the emulator, some programs can actually run faster than the real thing.
\nDevelopment<\/p>\n
\nThe first version was based on the inx86.h code for vMac, with a few other changes. Now it is being developed as a stand alone program that works with the GNU and GNU Hurd operating systems on a generic 68000 CPU.
\nThe emulator is quite robust, and can run Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, and various x86 and x86_64 operating systems and GNU\/Hurd. It still also works under the OS9 emulator on top of vMac.<\/p>\n

\nIt emulates the Joystick, Built in speaker, and the keyboard and mouse controller ports. The built in speaker is wired directly to the I2S. The internal speaker has a higher volume than the old one. The keyboard and mouse controller are wired to the \u201cvirtual\u201d 3 button controller on the I2S. The virtual joystick is shaped like the original Joystick controller, but no longer has a knob. The button is the button you get when you press the joystick up. The mouse emulated uses the \u201cY-direction\u201d for movement and has an extra button at the right end of the mouse cursor. It also has a new scroll wheel for navigating the screen. The panel lights up when you get to the home screen. (There is one extra LED that I\u2019ve never gotten to work)
\nThe graphical enhancements are more varied. On the real Plus the screen always has the same resolution. With the Plus emulator, the resolution can be 64\u00d764, 128\u00d7128, 192\u00d7192, and 256\u00d7256. This is a full screen emulator. You can also use the provided 256\u00d7192 \u201cwindow\u201d mode.
\nAll of the ROM programs and 8 bit data included with the emulator.
\nIt is not a ROM hack. The whole program is 99% original, there are no backups or ROMs added. The only additions are 1) the expansion port code which is needed to make some of the memory I\/O available and 2) The screen mode codes. For example, in 512 Ke mode, 128K software would use 2 of the 512k ROM pages and 128K software would use only the remaining 128K. The emulator keeps track of whether a page is used for a particular program. And it can swap out a page with a DMA transfer instead of resetting a memory address and CPU-allocating it.
\nThe rest of the current code is the original, ROM only version. It will be interesting to see if this program can be taken to the next level.
