Mortality during critical care of adult patients with severe sepsis and septic shock continues to remain high. Septic shock is a common manifestation of sepsis. Sepsis is the nonspecific clinical manifestation of localized or systemic inflammation. Early recognition of septic shock and administration of appropriate interventions can result in better outcomes.<\/p>\n

A better understanding of the pathophysiology of sepsis would allow for more focused therapies. Th~2~-like anti-inflammatory response is likely involved in the pathogenesis of sepsis. We sought to develop an assay that would be capable of measuring the Th1\/Th2 cytokine shift and would be useful as an adjunctive diagnostic tool for sepsis.<\/p>\n

Methods
\n=======<\/p>\n

Female BALB\/c mice (N=10) were used and randomized into three experimental groups: normal (N) received no treatment, sham (S) received 2 ml of NS i.p. and LPS (10 mg\/kg i.v.), cecal-ligated (CL) received a partial ligation of the cecum. Animals were anaesthetized with ether. The surgery was performed using aseptic technique. Sham and CL group received 10 mg\/kg i.v. of LPS while the other group received only NS (6 ml\/kg i.p.). Blood samples were collected at 6 hours (N vs. S, LPS vs. NS), then, animals were killed with 120 mg\/kg of ether at 12 hours. The samples were tested for TNF and IL-10 by ELISA.<\/p>\n

Results
\n=======<\/p>\n

In the cecal-ligated animals, both TNF and IL-10 increased (p=0.001) while in the NS group, only IL-10 increased (p\\<\/p>\n
