However, these 2 behaviors were sensitive to mothers’ roles in the labor force. Mothers who worked outside the home were more likely to engage in child care than were non-working mothers, and mothers who cared for their children were more likely to engage in child care than were those who did not care for their children. With respect to child care, mothers who spent more time in child care were less likely to show monitoring behaviors, and mothers who spent less time in child care were more likely to show such behaviors. In addition to mothers’ roles in child care, we found that working hours, hours spent interacting with their children, and numbers of older siblings significantly predicted mothers’ child care behaviors.
