The newspaper reported this week, \u201cAnyone who insults the dignity of the president is liable to two years\u2019 imprisonment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dignity is a popular word on social media. Last month, writers Jessica Valenti and Ta-Nehisi Coates published a touching essay lamenting that the country is waging a war on women\u2019s dignity. Then, everyone posted a \u201cdignity gap\u201d meme \u2014 a comparison showing how blacks suffer more from racism than whites, women suffer more from sexism than men, and transgender people suffer from everyone else\u2019s discrimination against them.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s dignity! I\u2019m sick of reading and hearing people say that black lives don\u2019t matter, women don\u2019t matter, gay people don\u2019t matter. Whenever these tropes are employed, it\u2019s meant to be a way of excusing the murder of many of us, especially black men. Nobody wants to say those are real bullets. Nobody wants to think about how often it is black men who have to kill other black men.<\/p>\n<p>When you say black lives don\u2019t matter, the message is that police don\u2019t need to fear us. It\u2019s the opposite. And I imagine that\u2019s why everybody so quickly wrote about \u201cdignity\u201d after the law was passed.<\/p>\n<p>Though Florence\u2019s law doesn\u2019t address national dignity, the incident in Florence reminds us of a basic fact about human dignity: Everybody feels like they\u2019re entitled to it.<\/p>\n<p>Today in the editorial board meeting, these editors talked about sending reporters to the dinner at the pink-carpeted Embassy Suites. (Yes, there were pink flags.)
