\nWe studied the effect of various misoprostol regimens on gastric pH and the patient acceptability of these regimens. Misoprostol was given as a single dose of 800 micrograms after a test dose of 60 micrograms plus 40 micrograms every four hours over 2 days, as a single dose of 800 micrograms every 6 hours over 4 days, as a single dose of 1200 micrograms with or without 60 micrograms plus 40 micrograms every 4 hours over 6 days, or as a single dose of 800 micrograms with 40 micrograms every 12 hours over 14 days. Patients rated their satisfaction with the regimens on a visual analogue scale. The interval between pyloric closure and discharge was 10.5 +\/- 0.4 days in the single dose of 1200 micrograms and 7.9 +\/- 0.4 days in the single dose of 800 micrograms. The percentage of patients with a pH less than 3 was significantly greater with a single dose of 1200 micrograms than with a single dose of 800 micrograms or with the other regimens, which did not differ (10%, 7% and 7%, respectively; P less than 0.001). The acceptability of a regimen was measured subjectively by each patient’s preference. No patient reported a preference for the 400 micrograms every 6 hours regimen. Similarly, none of the patients who received a single dose of 1200 micrograms preferred this regimen. The 14-day regimen was preferred by 24% of patients. The use of 800 micrograms plus 40 micrograms every 12 hours is as effective and acceptable as the 400 micrograms every 6 hours regimen for early home care of PPI-refractory gastroesophageal reflux.import { JupyterUtil } from “..\/jupyter\/JupyterUtil”;
