Democratic lawmakers said Wednesday they are seeking voter approval of a constitutional amendment that would allow the Legislature to eliminate the initiative process for creating legislation.<\/p>\n
An amendment drafted by Assemblyman Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) and author by Sen. Roderick Wright (D-Inglewood) would allow lawmakers to either pass a bill with a two-thirds vote of the Legislature — something that can be done now — or put a question on the ballot asking voters whether they favor a measure to pass legislation through the state Constitution.<\/p>\n
“It’s a plan that can win the votes of those who are fine with empowering the Legislature to pass laws without limitations, but does not deliver the political cover to do it through a constitutional amendment when it’s a losing issue,” said Ron Nehring, head of California Common Cause.<\/p>\n
