A second class of six students is slated to begin this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The students in that second group range in age from 13 to 18 and come from eight of Florida\u2019s high schools. They are participating in the Florida Advanced Archaeology and Teaching (F.A.A.T.) program, which is run by the Florida Museum of Natural History.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get a say in what I do,\u201d Wyatt said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s common for kids to want to work with their hands in the field, but it\u2019s rare for them to get hands-on experience in the field. When the F.A.A.T. program was introduced last year, the idea was to give kids a real-life opportunity to study archaeology, said Stephanie Vass, Ph.D., assistant curator of collections and special projects at the museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think they\u2019re going to find potsherds and make little piles of potsherds, and they\u2019re going to be an archaeologist,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was our goal to provide them with a chance to do more hands-on activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traci Barnard, Ph.D., director of the research education program at the Florida Museum of Natural History, has been working with the archaeology department for 11 years and has seen the program grow.
