\ntreaty-making, he secured a charter from the Congregational church to
\nhold a General Court, and thus preceded the Legislature in the movement
\nwhich resulted in the founding of the State University. So deeply
\ninterested in Indian affairs did he become, that he abandoned a
\npromising career as a Congregational minister in 1781, and went to
\nSpringfield, to assist John Adams in fighting the Revolution. His
\nsympathy with the Indians led him into rivalry with the Congregational
\nchurch. Instead of remaining in Massachusetts, he took his residence in
\nMansfield, and gained distinction as a lawyer and a judge.<\/p>\n
