Getting Down to Basics: Taming Your Image Library
Photoshop is one of the most powerful image editing programs, but it also contains a number of tools that can be confusing at first. The following sections help you get your bearings so that you can take control of your image library.
Opening an image in Photoshop
Unlike the photo albums in your home, which have a familiar and human-friendly layout, your image library is based on layers, rather than albums. In addition, a layer is placed on a layer above it, and the selected layer may have more than one edit in place. After editing, you often need to combine and rearrange layers to bring the elements together in an effective design. It’s all done in an easy-to-understand format using layers, and it’s easy to see the visual results you achieve after editing.
After you understand how the layers and other features work in Photoshop, you’ll be able to take control of your image library and build the visual image that you want.
Creating a new image in Photoshop
Photoshop enables you to open existing images, such as photos or illustrations, and make alterations to them, or create new images from scratch. This section explains how to make and save new images in the program.
You can use many different software programs to make images, and some of them work like Photoshop: You first create or edit your image, and then save it. The next step is to move the image from one program to another program to make the final adjustments.
Creating a new image from scratch
If you decide to create a new image with the latest version of Photoshop, you need to know that all of the features and tools that you have learned about in this book are available for making images. For example, you can use the Eraser tool that’s covered in Chapter 8 to erase mistakes or unwanted areas of a picture (see Figure 11-1). You can move a selection or use the lasso tool to select parts of an image. After you’re satisfied with your work, you can modify the selection or image as needed and save the file for posting on the Web.
Working with the basic tools
The basic tools for creating and editing images in Photoshop are shown in Figure 11-2. You can create and modify your image with the Tool Options and Edit and Select tools. You can also

I’m currently at the beginning of what has been termed a “season of change” by my gynecologist.
I still have all of the same problems as all the other women with polycystic ovary syndrome, but my cycle has become unpredictable. Not to mention the increases in my period, which is still hard to manage.
I started seeing the gynecologist a few months ago, after I felt as though I was slowly becoming disabled by my estrogen. I had great difficulty feeling confident during the day, especially when I’m in a crowd. I was constantly anxious, with a nearly chronic lack of sleep, and the adrenal fatigue was terrible. I would crave sweets, can’t sleep unless I take melatonin, and have little to no energy to devote to anything.
It was terrifying to look in the mirror and see what was happening to my body. I wore a large amount of makeup to hide it, and my skin was so dry that my eyebrows would sometimes crack. I remember so clearly a weekend trip to my parents’ place in western MA, when my sister and I decided to go shoe shopping with our mother. While we were out, a woman in the women’s department stopped us and asked, “Are you sisters?” When I replied, “yes,” she said, “Oh my god, I’m so sorry. I’m doing a post on estrogen!”
I often still feel anxious when walking into a grocery store, and when doing so it’s often to get specific items that I have absolutely no appetite for, which then makes me just want to hide in the bathroom. I am terrified of the future.
It’s not that I want to eschew life completely. I like to be around people, and I like to travel. I also like hiking, going to concerts, and hanging out with friends. However, I can’t enjoy things like that because I’m afraid of what is going on inside of my body. I can’t fully enjoy hanging out with my family, because I’m thinking about whether my testosterone levels are going to go up or down, or if it’s my hormones or my thyroid. This guilt is definitely contributing to the overall dysfunction.
