Lighten the image and create a softer background
Looking to create a soft background or really darken the image?
Here are some techniques that will be useful.
Rasterizing
Select the Rasterize option from the Process panel menu. The original document will be gray while a copy is made and the new image is darkened for the background.
To get back the original, press Ctrl+Y (or go back to the Layers panel and select Layer 1). Rasterizing is often used to adjust shadows and color while making a copy of the original.
Removing artifacts
The Burn tool is great for removing halos, bleed marks, or other artifacts, making it a great tool for making corrections.
Removing the halos
To remove the halos, hold down the Alt key and select the Burn (B) tool from the Tools panel menu. The Burn tool creates a mask, which is used to lighten the shadow areas of the halos while leaving the image’s main color unchanged.

To undo the burn, press Ctrl+Z (or go to the Layers panel and select Layer 1).
Removing noise
Using a circular brush to remove noise is a useful technique.
The Fuzziness slider of the Brush panel sets the amount of fuzziness of the brush.
Highlight the noise areas and reduce the size of the brush.
Press Alt to reduce the brush size.
When you press Alt, the brush size will reduce to the size of the noise halo. You can check the amount of noise to decide when to stop reducing the brush size.
