History
AutoCAD is one of the oldest of the three most commonly used CAD programs: On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) applications (AutoCAD and Architecture), and Business Intelligence (BI) applications (Business Catalyst and MicroStation). It was introduced in December 1982 and had 20 million installations by May 2012. AutoCAD is still one of the two best selling desktop CAD applications on the market.
AutoCAD’s roots go back to 1978, when the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) at the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) released their implementation of a desktop drafting and CAD system for use by its clients, the Ford Motor Company and Caterpillar Inc. NCMS’s system, originally known as the “Rapid Application Development Environment” (RAD), was quickly adopted by other aerospace, defense, machine tool, and other manufacturing companies, and was used by most of the major NCMS clients for more than a decade. According to its history, AutoCAD started as a family of applications within this early project:

Autodesk’s CAD products all come in two basic formats: DXF and DWG. The DWG format is used for 2D design, including drawings, while the DXF format is used for 2D and 3D files. AutoCAD is the only product in the AutoCAD line that does not support the PDF format.

Customizations written in the AutoLISP programming language are stored in the AutoCAD application data. If the user does not have a connected network when the file is sent, or the send-to network is down, the file is downloaded and saved to the user’s computer. The “send to” functionality is available for most file formats that can be transferred, including DWG, DXF, AI, AIA, CIV and PTC files.
