This tutorial explains how to use PEAR Mail, a lightweight component that
allows you to send mail easily and test your
SMTP services.
Basic setup
It is recommended that you set up the following basic resources before
running the tutorial.
The mail server
The mail server used in this tutorial will be sendmail. Our
site uses a CentOS server at host Name.test.com. Feel free
to pick your server’s host address.
The local mail server
This tutorial will use an smtp-to-mail-server.org address and an
email address in domain name.test.com
Setup sendmail
On CentOS 6 or 7, open the /etc/sysconfig/sendmail file. Add
the following line to the file:
LOCAL_CONFIG/sendmail_path=/usr/sbin/sendmail
Save the file. The /etc/sysconfig/sendmail file should now look like
this:
RUN-PARAMETER/sendmail_path=/usr/sbin/sendmail
Install the mail package
With sendmail installed, it is time to install the PEAR Mail package.
yum -y install php-pear
Create the SMTP hostname files
You will use the smtp-to-mail-server.org hostname for sending
mail, but PEAR Mail needs some configuration files named using
a dot (.) in the file name. To keep the tutorial clean,
copy the files you need from /etc/php.d/smtp.php.d to
/etc/php.d/smtp.php.d.pem to
/etc/php.d/smtp.php.d/000

This tutorial is going to be about Arrays, Arrays.prototype.indexOf(), and Arrays.prototype.reverse(). The first thing I want to do is show you the code for my solution, and then we’ll talk about what’s going on.

Before, I had a function that would return true or false depending on if there was already an ‘O’ in this array. I made it do exactly that, and then I realized why it was slow. But, to continue with my solution, I decided to change it to get the actual index of the letter. This way, I wouldn’t have to search the whole array every time I wanted to use it.
I put in an example of what the function looks like below.

I was able to get the index within 7ms, which is a big speedup. However, a bigger issue is that we lost the ability to perform a reverse lookup. To do that, I need to use the reverse() function.
