Time4U is a time-tracking software that has client-server synchronization.
The main idea is that several people are working together in teams track their times using the client. The client is can be used without network access altogether, but whenever it has access to the server (e.g. via VPN) it synchronize its data either automatically or triggered by the user. At the end of the month (or week) the team-leaders or accountants can use the data on the server to create billings, performance reports etc.

The software is meant to be used by a team of several people as a central time-tracker, rather than having one individual self-assigned task. Therefore the first thing the client does is to ask the server for a list of account-names and then it asks the servers for each team’s activity.
The main principle of the system is that everybody is working on his/her task in parallel. However some kind of control is needed in order to avoid too much overlap of work. Using the system we can achieve that by letting the team-leaders specify which of the members work on which specific tasks (e.g. with the Email Addresses on the details page).
The system is intended to be used as a team-management system that produces beautiful reports in pdf, doc, etc. For this there are different kinds of reports on the server-side.
Furthermore the client also stores the work done as task-specific steps, so we can have a history overview even if the user is not logged into the server. In addition, it’s possible to assign a tag to steps so the user can recognize which tasks he/she has already finished.
The UI is designed to be a high-quality web-app and used the best practices.
There are two features that are interesting.
The main one is the client-server synchronization. We use the client’s time-sync on all computers to get a common working-hours table that everybody on the team has access to. This speeds up the communication with the team-leaders and accountants and allows them to keep the time-sheets secure even if any of the team members connect via different computers.
With the traditional time-tracking software it is not possible to use the system as intended without having VPN-access to the server. The client always needs to make a connection to the server to get synchronized.
This is our first alpha-version which should solve these shortcomings.
The second feature is that the idea is to allow the user to choose the locations (timezones) that he/she is working on when he/she is working on client-side. This allows to make use of the timezone-independence even when working from home. However, the time-tracking software needs to be aware of the location and automatically set-up the timezones for the team-leader and accountants so the billings are created correctly.
