## Using Photoshop to Create Graphics
When you open Photoshop and create your first image, you see an image file called a _psd_ or _photoshop document_. The document is simply a container that holds your image as a bitmap or raster image (see Figure 2-1). All Photoshop drawing tools are available on the command bar to the right. The tools are organized as follows:
* The Rectangular Marquee tool enables you to select a freehand area of any size to drag a freehand outline over the image. Note: If you click and drag in the center of the image, you select the entire picture (and nothing).
* The Pen tool allows you to draw with a pencil-like control object.
* The Brush tool allows you to select a stroke from a predefined brush.
* The Lasso tool lets you define an area of any shape or size by creating a selection with an oval or polygonal path.
* The Selection tool, when activated, shrinks the image to the size of the tool’s active path. To resize the image to a specific measurement, simply enter a numerical value into the Size text field.
* The Clone Stamp tool, when activated, allows you to copy and paste selected areas from the image to the picture.
* The Eraser tool allows you to draw freehand on the image.

4. Taking the proper photo
Choosing a location for the photo
With a few exceptions, your images can be shot anywhere. However, for a good photo, you want to be in the right location at the right time.
Chances are, you’ll want to photograph some of the following:
• Flowers and other plants
• Beaches and oceans
• Urban settings
• Structures and buildings
Choosing the proper location can be a difficult task. It’s best to scout the location first and only take the shot after you’ve figured out what you need to do.
For example, if you are photographing a forest, you might want to first find the camera position that gives you the foreground element you want to include in your final picture. If you are photographing a building or a pond, you will want to have the sunlight (that is pointing toward the window) to provide the background.
Selecting the proper camera settings
The camera settings you use to shoot the picture will affect the way it appears in the final picture.
Your camera settings can be as simple as the ISO, shutter speed, aperture or as complex as the white balance or exposure mode.
Let’s take a closer look at the different types of settings you can use to shoot the perfect picture:
1. The ISO
The ISO speed refers to the digital number assigned to a film or digital sensor. Most cameras are assigned different ISO speeds, such as 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200.

The present invention relates to a circuit for controlling a stator winding of an electrical machine, and in particular, to a system for controlling start-up of a stator of a shaded pole.
Electric machines include a stator having a plurality of coils or windings. For example, a motor includes a stator having a plurality of coils or windings. It is common for stators to include windings having a rectangular cross-sectional shape having an axis parallel to a rotating axis of the rotor. Typically, each of the windings includes a plurality of enameled wire pieces called “wire turns”. The wire turns are wound around a core to form the coils or windings.
In an alternate construction, a coil can include a plurality of wire pieces that are wound to form the coil. These winding techniques are used interchangeably herein.
When the windings include a rectangular cross-sectional shape, the windings form teeth for poles, and slots for slots of a rotor. While the rectangular windings are common, there are no specific dimensions required for rectangular windings.
As discussed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,353,317 to Lisby (the ‘317 patent), among other things, a stator winding is comprised of stator windings, each of which have an electrical potential or phase. If the electrical potential of any phase is not uniform across the diameter of the stator, the rotor may rotate unevenly, or the load supplied to the electrical machine may be affected. In addition, if the electrical potential at different phases vary from one stator winding to the next, one winding may short circuit the rest.
The ‘317 patent provides for a shading effect for the stator of an electrical machine to reduce the potential variations of the electrical phase across the diameters of the stator. The shading effect results in the different windings of the stator being electrically connected to one another through a shaded pole. Generally, shaded pole effects are most common for stators of permanent magnet machines.
To reduce variation of electrical potential across the diameter of the stator, the shaded pole includes at least one slot formed in the shaded pole. The width of the slot typically increases from the radially outer diameter of the shaded pole toward the rotor, and the slot is typically formed with a constant width (apart from minor sharp turns or bends along the slot).
