The ratio of PD-1/PD-L1 plays a critical role in determining whether an immune response is initiated and when it occurs. However, it is unknown whether PD-1 and PD-L1 are equally expressed in the tumor microenvironment. We investigated whether PD-1 and PD-L1 have different expression patterns in patients with NSCLC. Furthermore, we aimed to investigate the relationships between PD-1/PD-L1 expression and the clinicopathologic parameters of NSCLC. A total of 90 patients with NSCLC were enrolled in the study. Tissues were obtained from patients who underwent surgical resection. We investigated differences in PD-1 and PD-L1 immunostaining of NSCLC cells by using the Chi-square test and compared the co-expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 in NSCLC. We also investigated the association between the co-expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 and tumor staging, differentiation, lymph node metastasis, and tumor size. Furthermore, overall survival was analyzed by using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. We found that PD-1 and PD-L1 immunostaining in NSCLC was moderate to strong (score 2-3) in 86.7% and 87.8% of patients, respectively.
