Octopus! is a compact program written in Python that aims to help you re-encode sound files to a higher quality MP3 files. The program can handle MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC and.M4A files formats.
In order to re-encode the files you need to run the application in command line mode and to set the paths to the encoding utilities included in the package.
Octopus! features include:
Allows you to choose a compression level from 1 to 9,
Automatically splits your file according to the number of file pieces,
Calculates the optimum encoding settings for each piece,
Automatically decides the total overall encoding time and the quality vs. size trade-off, and
Includes a GUI that displays the progress of the encoding process and allows you to pause it at any time.
Octopus! supports both MP3 and WAV codecs, and for each format you can choose either Opus, Speex or Vorbis encoder with corresponding quality level. The WAV files can be split into as many pieces as you want.
The Encoder utilities are included in the package and are located under the “dist” subfolder. Each of the utilities is named after a corresponding WAVE format file extension. For instance, the APE utility is located under the “APE” subfolder, and in order to call it from Octopus! you would type the following command in the command line:
ape -d 33.1 k -t 128 2 -o….wav
You can use the “split” option in Octopus! to split the file using either in-place or recursive splitting.
Octopus! GUI:
Octopus! has an integrated GUI that lets you to control the re-encoding process. It includes the following options:
the ability to choose the quality setting for each piece,
the ability to pause or resume the re-encoding process,
the display of the compression ratio and encoded size for each piece,
the display of the overall percentage of completed encoding and the maximum overall encoding time, and
the display of the current encoding status.
The GUI can be used as a standalone program with Octopus! files or it can be used to control Octopus! in the context of the Octopus! console (by pressing “CTRL + CTRL + C” or “CTRL + CTRL + X
