Swami Kripalu On Health, Yoga, Life
Last week, I had the privilege of attending a lecture by Swami Kripalu on the life and teachings of Gurdjieff. Swami Kripalu is a graduate of the school of classical yoga that was founded by Gurdjieff in New York in 1922. Gurdjieff, a former Red Army officer, was also a student of Jung and a disciple of Ferenczi. Gurdjieff codified his views on yoga and several of its practices in his book, the Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson. Also, Kripalu is the founder of the Arsha Vidya Institute in Mumbai.
Swami Kripalu is a man of great charisma and he is most certainly an icon in the yoga world. While I am sure that you have never heard of him, Kripalu is one of the more influential people in yoga today. Anyone involved in the world of yoga and meditation in India or the west is familiar with his teachings and works. Because of his celebrity status, he also has a very large community of devotees who are there to support and learn from him. I am fortunate that my yoga community also includes devotees of Kripalu, so I have had the privilege of attending a few lectures and classes by him.
