Neoregelia irregulare
Neoregelia irregulare, commonly known as the tangled rex, is a species of flowering plant in the family Bromeliaceae. It is endemic to Ecuador. It is found in gallery forests, cloud forests, and on higher-altitude terrain.
Description
Neoregelia irregulare is an evergreen, clump-forming rhizomatous herb or subshrub with erect stems to a maximum height of about. There are a number of stem branches along the stems. The leaves are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant and sessile. They are shorter and wider than those of the related Neoregelia elegans. The upper leaves are dark blue with a green margin, and the lower leaves are a shiny green.
The inflorescence consists of three, dark red flowers, with a white labellum. The flowers have a very short spur about half-way along the flower tube, with 5-6 linear lobes. Flowering occurs from January to June.
Taxonomy
The species was first described in 1968 as Reginella irregulare, published in Lindleyana XXVII: 167. The specific epithet (irregulare) is a Latin word meaning “irregular”.
The natural habitat of this species is montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.
