Do we dare to say that Tarnished Arcana might stand up to one of the best action RPGs on the DS this year?
The biggest difference between Tarnished Arcana and an action RPG is the huge breadth of the world that you can explore. There is no real restriction on areas you can enter, you can even turn off areas that you find boring if you wish. The game lets you go anywhere without a second thought. This is very different from the games that focus on stylistic mechanics. The fact that parts can be turned off doesn’t mean that the areas inside them have a graphical design. People who play the games with difficult mechanics believe that the hand of the designer is evident everywhere. I do not agree with that point of view. After all, Tarnished Arcana is developed by the same company that has made several Metal Gear series, so it is from the very people who made the Metal Gear Solid series.
Rather than going through an incredibly narrow tunnel, it is more like traveling through an open plain where you can easily grow attached to the scenery. If you have not been told the specific conditions for the area in which you will be exploring, you immediately feel a sense of excitement at the prospect. After all, there are many things that you cannot find in the limited world of the game.

I’ve long been a fan of the Lord of the Rings Online. One of my best memories playing LIONs was when a friend I had just met on a new server came with a pack of goblins into my starting area. In MMOs, this often means I fight for my life and cool down period without anyone willing to help me. I’m not sure if that was the intention of it when the pack of goblins were introduced in LIONs, but I sometimes wonder if a hundred goblins in a starter area was just a bad joke that troubled veteran players. What would Lord of the Rings Online fans think about taking this type of hideous threat to starter level area? Just taking a combat role in Ossus is a big challenge, even for experienced players. In the first act, about ten minutes into the fight at least six operatives immediately surround him, with one being bonded to his shoulder. He could have left the area but there was no other viable option, as the last operative is already rushing inside. Even if he manages to defeat the elite agent while sustaining almost permanent fire from all sides, from elite guards on each side, and from goblins at each corner, he eventually could be overcome by the six operatives, even if it is an arena in the middle of Ossus. It feels like being wowed by the amazing Hollywood special effects in The Hobbit or even the three-act story in Resident Evil 6, but is it really the take on Ring Wraiths by Lord of the Rings Online? Why did they include this situation into the starting area?
It’s not the first time that sequels have made egregious changes to starters. Requiem of the Eternal and The Lord of the Rings Online both have a similar situation where second generation community guides (and I am using the Lord of the Rings Online term) were introduced. Originally, they were supposed to allow anyone to start raids in Valhalla. When this was changed into an area with 6 to 10 random raiders, each “boss” takes 5 seconds to reach the raid. This along with mandatory skills (and the skill on the skill bar at the counter) results in all single-player raids being inefficient, as most people would never have enough time to react to the raid master being assembled.
