Insomniac Games’ The Last of Us and Sunset Overdrive recently took gamers by storm for their compelling stories, beautiful graphics, and beautiful moving characters. This combination set the stage for one of the greatest game narratives in the history of the medium. What I learned about writing a good story in The Last of Us had an impact that I haven’t experienced in a game since.
Considering that The Last of Us is a game about a post-apocalyptic world, you would assume that The Last of Us’ story would be about a bleak world. You would be wrong. The game’s story centers around a young boy and girl who, in the wake of the apocalypse, have lost everything to human nature. The two are constantly harassed, kidnapped, tortured, and left to die by gangs and nonhumans alike, all because the two are different.
Their plight comes to a head with the game’s main characters Joel and Ellie, and it’s in the form of “big” events. Joel and Ellie have a son, Riley, at the peak of the world’s depravity, and Ellie is pregnant with the couple’s child. Their two worlds collide during a harsh storm, and during that encounter the dead begin to rise. With two young children in their arms, Joel and Ellie attempt to make their way through the post-apocalyptic world without being killed.
The most impressive thing about the story of The Last of Us is how it paints a picture of a world that is constantly rotting. The decaying bodies of the dead lie scattered all throughout the land, and evil plays a significant part in the story. Even the most tender moments of the story, such as the interactions between the two children, the best moments of the story, are tinged with evil. Even the best character in The Last of Us, Ellie, has her own dark side that she tries to suppress.
The dialog between Joel and Ellie is one of my favorite parts of The Last of Us. Joel is sarcastic, jaded, and often has a pessimistic view on the world. Ellie, however, is incredibly upbeat and optimistic. This contrast between the two characters is one of the most interesting things in the game. It makes Joel and Ellie extremely relatable, and makes The Last of Us one of the most human games I’ve ever played.
Another interesting aspect of The Last of Us’ story is its characters. One of the most interesting things about the game’s characters is that they have a completely different dialogue for every
