In the world of Tarnished, the haphazard malevolent influence of the Hagur Empire threatens to corrupt the world. The perils that this ancient empire has brought along have fallen on the peaceful land of Paladis and have left the land tormented by so much misfortune that the entire land has been called “Hagur’s Hell.”
But there is a place where many of the twisted wishes of Hagur have been brought to life: the Shadowlands. In the Shadowlands, strange creatures appear, and the Hagur Empire acts out of its depths with evil powers.
One of these creatures is named Doom.
Doom has caused great misfortune in the Lands Between, and is the one who it is said that Hagur has been angered by. The story of the game is that a certain man in the lands between used to be an SOB and got himself killed for his crimes. At the same time a vagabond of another age got himself resurrected. When the vagabond saw this he decided that he wanted to make the man a King. He killed the King and took his place, and thus he became the new King.
Overall the story seems a bit weak, but if you can get past that the quests are mostly fun. The first 4 or 5 quests were rather easy and not very interesting though, and one of them had just a little bit of “What the heck is this weird place, anyway?” sprinkled on top.
But then this turned into something of a freaking story. The mid-level quests were fascinating and delightful, with small twists at each turn, and the story wasn’t a drag.
The city is a fairly large cast of characters with different dialogue and different ways to complete each quest. I think it’s the only RPG where every NPC gets a sex scene and a fighting scene. It’s amazing. The system of “passing a scroll to your alchemist” is wonderfully created. You’ll have a pile of scrolls in your inventory, and only one is chosen at a time as you pass them to the alchemist.
I’ve never really enjoyed role playing games before. But this one was fun. I was even able to make minor character. I got a sort of bradycardia spell that makes the character keep their eyes open for a while. It’s a very sick feeling. I also got the ability to make a quicksilver belt and a quick silver pendant.
The combat is a bizarre oddity, with a combat system where you can block at the cost of temporarily interrupting the attack. That’s pretty good, but then you can dodge out of the way of a stunted attack if you’re quick enough. And you can use special moves that are few and far between, since they do very high damage, but are very risky.
I’m very happy with the voice acting. All the characters fit their personalities perfectly, even the tiny kids.
I’m also really impressed with how the music is written. Each song has a tendency to play when it’s needed to fit the mood of the scene. And the music is variable to a point. If you have a battle with a lot of magic, there’s a song with a battle beat
