New Release – Ambush by Vernon Collins
Description:

(I am advised that this is not a standalone. The events of the book do not take place as described above – they take place in a larger, unrelated account from the point of view of another character. That said – the events described above happen within the greater narrative.)
A really interesting world and a really interesting set of characters. I wasn’t sure if I’d get into this book, but this definitely wins out over the world.
I was impressed by how realistic it is. There’s a great deal of detail in the world building. I felt like I was a part of the world in a sense. The descriptions of the food, the clothing, the terrain felt visceral to me. There were plenty of references, but I feel like I really got the sense of the locale. I can almost picture the landscape.
I was really worried that this book would fall into the “male gaze” trap. Fortunately, that didn’t happen. The focus is genuinely on the characters. Despite their shared history and occupations they are very different and I really liked the
