CAMP HILL, Pa. – Half of all North Carolina households own guns, but fewer than half of those say they are members of the National Rifle Association, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The majority of gun owners didn’t join the NRA, and many did not know the group existed, according to the Washington Post/ABC News poll, which has a margin of error of 4 percentage points. But the poll also showed that more than 70 percent of gun owners think it would be harder to have an effective debate about gun control.

About 80 percent of those who don’t have guns say they are against allowing people to carry concealed weapons, and more than 70 percent think that it’s too easy to buy guns.

The NRA also drew the ire of a majority of those who do have guns.

The survey also found that the majority of gun owners say they would support the death penalty or life in prison without parole for a person convicted of shooting someone during an armed robbery or while in the commission of murder. Forty-nine percent support the death penalty for people convicted of murder while 31 percent support the death penalty for people convicted of murder in the commission of armed robbery.

And about 56 percent of gun owners don’t think it should be legal to allow people to carry guns on school grounds.

Firearm injuries are the nation’s leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 24, with firearms being used to kill or injure about 450 students every year.

Two-thirds of the gun owners surveyed agreed with the NRA’s contention that high school students should be permitted to carry guns to protect themselves from a gunman.

“This is a recent phenomenon, but it’s really unnecessary,” said Andrew Copson, director of policy at the Institute of Public Policy of Grenada, where the poll was conducted.
